| Child 1: Ellis George Phillips b. Jan. 16, 1886 d. Oct. 29, 1958 |
A letter dated Oct. 30, 1958 written by
Evaline Tagatz PHILLIPS to her sister Adaline Tagatz said:
"... Fred's brother,
Ellis, died yesterday morning. Marie called shortly after we
left. Marie and family are coming today to make the arrangements
for the burial here..."
A postcard referenced in Orlan Warnke's "A Warnke Genealogy" suggests that Ellis spent time as a wheat harvest hand in the Dakotas (see Page 84). Relatives told me that Ellis was a teacher, a private detective and a salesman. Family notes left by Evaline Tagatz PHILLIPS give details of Delia's and George's children [some of the following details were not independently confirmed]: He first married Mina R. Knapp on June 20, 1915 [Mina was b. Feb. 15, 1892 at Jasper, NY; she was a graduate of Westfield High School in Marquette Co., WI and was a teacher]; Mina died Apr. 7, 1918 at Sheboygan, leaving no known children. For photos of Ellis, go to: P4; P5; P8; P14; P16; P48. For a photo of Mina (his first wife), go to: P44. A 1920 Federal Census in Sheboygan, Sheboygan Co., WI, shows:
Ellis married Marie Ries on Feb. 16, 1920 [Marie was b. June 11, 1899, daughter of Charles and Johanna (Sprangers) Ries of Sheboygan]; they had three children. A 1930 Federal Census in Sparta, Monroe Co., WI, shows:
For photos of Ellis' children -- Marie, Georgienne and/or Phillip, go to: P36; P46. Ellis is buried in the Germania Methodist Cemetery, Shields Township, Marquette Co., WI [Row 2, No. 2]; his tombstone said Ellis G. Phillips was born 1886 and died 1958. Family notes say he died in Stoughton, WI. I have photos of Ellis, including one where he is pictured holding a trombone in a Germania band. He is on the 1900, 1905 and 1910 census records with his parents (see census details). |
| Child 2:
May Henrietta Phillips b. May 8, 1888; d. July 10, 1983 |
When May was a child (1895), she took a trip to Massachusetts
with her grandmother Angelina Ellis, who
kept a diary of this trip (go to
Angelina Ellis' journal for details.)
The Minnesota Death Index, 1908-2002, on ancestry.com says that May Henrietta Gunderson was born May 8, 1888 and died July 10, 1983 in Goodhue (Minnesota). It said that her mother's maiden name was Block. The state file number is 017290. For photos of May, go to: P4; P8; P16. For a photo of May with her daughter Henrietta, go to: P37. To see a picture of May with her daughter Theodora Parker Bakke, go to: P68. Theodora married Donald Bakke. Notes left by Evaline Tagatz PHILLIPS and other family members say the following [some information not independently verified]: May was born in Wautoma, WI, on May 8, 1888; she married Cephas C. Parker on Jan. 17, 1909. Cephas was b. Oct. 23, 1873 in Germania, a son of Julia (Hale) and Rudolpho Warren Parker, a soldier in Co. H, 37th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War; Cephas died Jan. 1, 1913 and is buried in the Germania Methodist Cemetery. [SOURCE: Burial information from cemetery transcription by L.L. Ketchum at rootsweb.com] May and Cephas had one daughter in 1910. May's Father-in-Law: Further notes by my grandmother say that R.W. Parker died Jan. 24, 1899 (b. July 12, 1837 in Concord, Mass.). In 1860 he came to Wis. and settled in Germania. During the Civil War, he took part in a battle at Petersburg. He was there at the "blowing up of the mines" and received a bullet wound in his jaw, incapacitating him for further Army service. This wound caused his much suffering. He married Julia A. Hale (a native of Winchendon, Mass. who was living in Germania) on Mar. 12, 1867. The Montello Express on Mar. 23, 1867 wrote that Mr. Rodolpho W. Parker and Miss Julia A. Hale got married by Rev. H. Altwaidt. May's future first husband Cephas was on the 1900 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI:
Cephas' parents are on the 1870 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI:
The Parker family was living with my ancestor Henrietta Jones ELLIS PEIRCE HALL in 1880. Go to Henrietta's web page to see details on this census entry. To read more about the Hale and Parker families, go to The Community - Groton, Massachusetts: The Story of a Neighborhood. To see misc. Parker surname records, go to the Parker web page. May married a second time on Apr. 15, 1916, to Julius Gunderson, a dentist at Kenyon, Minnesota [Julius was b. July 19, 1878; d. Nov. 26, 1954]. Julius had two sons by a previous marriage, and Julius and May had a daughter in 1922. The 1880 Federal Census in Rochester, Olmsted Co., Minnesota likely shows May's future husband Julius [one of Julius' brothers was born in Wis.]:
The 1920 Federal Census in Kenyon, Goodhue Co., Minnesota shows May's brother-in-law Albert:
The 1930 Federal Census in Nerstrand, Rice County, Minnesota shows:
The Minnesota Death Index on ancestry.com confirms Julius L. Gunderson's date of death as Nov. 26, 1954. Place of death was Goodhue. The Minnesota Cemetery Inscription Index on ancestry.com shows Dr. Julius Levine Gunderson, born July 19, 1878 and died Nov. 26, 1954. He was buried in Kenyon Cemetery in Kenyon, Goodhue Co., WI. His first spouse was Henrietta Evan. Second spouse was May H. His parents were John and Olena Nelson Gunderson. The Minnesota Newspaper Headline Index on ancestry.com mentions an article on Nov. 21, 1903 that says Dr. Julius L. Gunderson married Henrietta Evan Dunlap. Her obituary is in a newspaper on Nov. 21, 1908. May is on the 1900 & 1905 census with her parents (see census details). |

I have an a newspaper clipping (undated, "Scenes of Youth Recalled at Germania," by Elaine Reetz, Argus correspondent), that talked about Vera Delia Phillips Hill's visit to Germania, Vera's birth place. It said Vera was age 90 at the time so it would have been about 1970. This article said Vera was from Cazenovia, NY, and was one of George's and Delia Block Phillips' eight children. Vera is quoted as having a picture of herself wearing a skirt made from fleece of their sheep that was woven into fabric at a Neshkoro woolen mill (the Wells family woolen mill). It said Vera was principal of the two-room Germania State Graded School from 1909-12, earning $30 a month to start and later $52.50. She had about 60 pupils total. Vera lived close to the school, but some students walked as much as four or five miles to get there. She added that the students brought their lunches with them in "little tin buckets," and those lunches often included sorghum bread ("Mollasey Brot") or "Smulta Brot" (from pork fryings). This article said Vera went to high school for four years and boarded in Montello. She also went to Oshkosh Normal School. Another newspaper clipping ("Woman Returns to Trace Her Germania Heritage", by Elaine Reetz, Northwestern correspondent - no date shows on my copy of this article) gives more details from her interview with Vera on her visit to Germania. Vera said she earned $10 for a dress and shoes for her high school graduation when she was a substitute teacher for a teacher in Montello who had the mumps. Vera was the class valedictorian. This article confirms her marriage to Floyd Hill of Moundville [Marquette Co., WI] in 1916. It said they moved to New York where they had a 600-acre farm with Percheron horses and a dairy herd. The Social Security Death Index on ancestry.com says that Vera D. Hill was born on Nov. 20, 1890 and died Dec. 2, 1898. Vera is on the 1900, 1905 and 1910 census with her parents (see census details). |
